Sunday June 29th: FY26 budget has been released. The Vocational Task Force is not included.

On June 29, 2025, an important update was released regarding the Fiscal Year 2026 state budget and its implications for vocational education in Massachusetts:

Despite concerns raised by educators, administrators, business partners, parents, and many other vocational education stakeholders, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education recently adopted new regulations modifying long-standing admissions policies for vocational-technical schools. These changes have raised numerous questions about their potential impacts on school districts, municipal finances, and Chapter 74 schools and programs.

In recognition of the need for thoughtful review and continued stakeholder engagement, Representatives Frank Moran, Adam Scanlon and the House of Representatives advanced a proposal to establish a Vocational Education Task Force in the FY26 budget. This Task Force would have brought together experts to evaluate admissions policies, assess program access and equity, and help ensure that vocational and technical schools continue to meet the needs of students and Massachusetts industries.

While that provision was not included in the final Conference Committee report, we are grateful to the House for prioritizing this initiative. As this legislative session progresses, we will continue to advocate for a review of these admissions changes and the unintended consequences they may have on Chapter 74 schools and programs, local governance by regional school committees, and regional agreements and financial arrangements among member communities.

We remain hopeful that continued collaboration with state leaders will support the creation of more seats to meet the unprecedented demand for Chapter 74 programs and will advance the development of a high-quality, equitable, and workforce-aligned vocational education system.

Our commitment remains strong: to advocate for robust investments in vocational, technical, agricultural, and CTE programs that prepare students for high-demand careers, while supporting local decision-making and the strength of our regional school partnerships. We look forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure Massachusetts students and employers continue to benefit from a world-class vocational education system.
